Logo    The Breese Chamber of Commerce is celebrating local small businesses by hosting the Small Business Christmas Kickoff this Saturday in downtown Breese.
The event will take place this Saturday, from 3 to 6 p.m., prior to the Chamber's Lighted Christmas Parade, which gets underway at 6 p.m. from Breese City Hall to North Side Park.
This is the third year the Chamber has conducted the Small Business Saturday, said Angie Wurtzler, president of the Breese Chamber of Commerce, and owner of AVH Ink and Vinyl.
What is Small Business Saturday, you might ask?
Well, it's an American shopping holiday held the Saturday after Thanksgiving in the United States during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year.
The Chamber's goal is to bring the people, who are already coming downtown to watch the parade, into local businesses by offering them a chance to win prizes when they make a purchase, as well as spreading some holiday cheer.

Wurtzler had stopped by a few businesses on Nov. 19 to make sure proprietors knew in advance about the coming event.
"Support your local businesses, they need it," said Breese Mayor Kevin Timmermann at the Nov. 16 Breese City Council meeting.
He said a certain percentage of their profits are big this time of year, "We need to support them."
Wurtzler said they are not closing any streets for the event, like the October Pumpkin Trail. And any business — "they don't even have to be Chamber members," she said — are still welcome to participate.
Patrons can "play to win" by spending at participating businesses. For every $10 spent, up to $250, at participating businesses, they will receive an entry into the prize drawing. Raffle tickets will be provided to each business.
The winners will be drawn the afternoon of Nov. 29 and announced on the Chamber's Facebook page.
People can bring a canned food item to AVH Ink & Vinyl, 490 N. Main St., or Bent Oak Golf Course and they will receive five free entries. The food collected will be donated to local families in need.
These are the participating businesses as of Monday:
•AVH Ink & Vinyl, open 9-12 p.m., save 10-40% on in-stock spirit wear, and they’ll have free Christmas coloring book T-shirts for the kids and holiday treats from 3-5 p.m.
