PHOTO BY JEREMY CHAWGO The Mater Dei baseball team picked up one of their biggest wins of the season on Saturday when they walked off the rival Cougars with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
They also beat New Athens while dropping games to Mascoutah and North Clay. They are 14-17 on the season.
MD hosted Civic Memorial on Tuesday before hosting Christ Our Rock on Wednesday and DuQuoin on Thursday.
Before blowing a five-run lead to MD on Saturday, Central had won six games in a row, including wins over North Clay, Red Bud and Waltonville.
Central is now 24-8 overall and were scheduled to play at home with Gibault on Monday and home again with Litchfield on Wednesday. They end the regular season with a home game with O’Fallon on Friday.
Mater Dei 8, Central 7: The Mater Dei baseball team rebounded from a 7-0 deficit to score eight unanswered runs to beat Central on Saturday.
Central scored six runs in the first inning and one run in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead.
Mater Dei pitcher Ethan Wheelan kept the Cougars off the scoreboard the rest of the game.
Mater Dei scored two runs in the third inning, one run in the sixth inning and five runs in the seventh inning for the victory.
Kyler Von Bokel doubled to start the bottom of the seventh inning for Mater Dei. Andrew Sinnock singled and Luke Etheridge was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. With one out, Jack Reynolds singled to score Von Bokel.
Avery Strader reached on an error to score both Sinnock and Etheridge to get the Knights within 7-6. Adrian Rendon singled to score Reynolds and tie the game 7-7. Hayden Melone doubled to score Strader with the winning run.
Central took early command of the game with six runs in the top of the first inning. Bryce Wieter had a two-RBI double with one out to put the Cougars up 2-0. Max Albers had an RBI single to score Wieter. Lincoln Radake was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Craig Schroeder and put Central up 4-0.
With two outs, Conlan Haar was walked with the bases loaded to score Kaden Henss. Albers scored on a passed ball to put Central up 6-0.
Central loaded the bases with one out in the second inning. Albers hit a sacrifice fly to score Alex Athmer.
Mater Dei reached the scoreboard in the third inning when Reynolds had a two-out, RBI single to score Von Bokel. Sinnock, who had walked earlier in the inning, was on third base with two outs and scored on a passed ball to get Mater Dei within 7-2.
Central put runners on first and second base with one out in the fifth inning. Reynolds caught a flyout in center field for the second out, then threw out the runner trying to advance to third base for the inning-ending double play.
Reynolds singled to open the sixth inning. He moved to second on a passed ball. Strader singled to score Reynolds.
Wheelan pitched 5-2/3 innings of relief, allowing no runs on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
Mater Dei had nine hits, led by Reynolds with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Von Bokel had two hits and scored two runs.
Wieter pitched six innings for Central, allowing four runs on five hits with eight strikeouts.
Central had seven hits. Albers had three hits, two RBI and one run scored. Wieter had two hits, including a double, with two RBI and one run scored.

PHOTO BY JEREMY CHAWGO Central 4, North Clay 1: The Cougars handed the Cardinals just their fourth loss of the season in a battle of state-ranked teams in Breese on Friday.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an unearned run against Central starter Alex Athmer.
Central tied things up in the second inning when Max Albers tripled with one out and scored on a wild pitch for a 1-1 contest.
Athmer helped his own cause in the third inning with his seventh homer of the season, a shot to right field for a 2-1 lead.
Central got two insurance tallies in the fifth inning when Landon Toennies reached on a single and Conlan Haar was hit by a pitch. Miles Browne sacrificed both runners over. Both runs scored on an infield grounder from Athmer for a 4-2 lead.
Athmer was the winning pitcher with six innings of work allowing one unearned run on five hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Browne pitched a perfect seventh for the save.
Athmer was 1-for-3 with three RBI while Haar was 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Evan Kreke was a bright spot for the Knights with a homer, one run scored and three batted in while Carter Spaeth was 2-for-3 with two singles and one RBI. MD was out hit 13-6 in the loss.
Cam Von Bokel took the loss for MD in his first career varsity start where he went 1-2/3 innings.
Trailing 9-0 in the bottom of the second inning, Spaeth singled and Von Bokel reached on an error before Kreke dialed long range with a three-run shot to left.
MD got two more in the third inning on an RBI ground out and an RBI single from Spaeth as they trailed 12-5.
Central 8, Waltonville 4: The Cougars used a strong start and finish to take down the Spartans in Breese on Thursday.
Bryce Wieter was 3-for-4 with two singles and a double while Alex Athmer and Conlan Haar each homered. Kaden Henss had three RBI for CHS. Wieter added two stolen bases.
Brady Ceto was the winner in relief for CHS with 1-1/3 innings worked where he allowed three hits and a walk with no runs scored.
Central got four runs in the first inning when Miles Browne walked and scored on a two-run shot from Athmer. Wieter doubled and Craig Schroeder was hit by a pitch before both runners scored on a single from Henss to make it 4-2 after one inning.
Haar followed with a solo shot to right-center to extend the Cougars’ lead to 5-2 after two innings.
Waltonville got two runs in the fourth to get within 5-4.

North Clay 10, Mater Dei 0 (6 innings): The Cardinals defended their home field in fine fashion with their win over MD on Wednesday.
Lane Kohrmann had Mater Dei’s only hit, a single while Avery Strader walked and stole a base.
Adrian Rendon took the loss as he went four innings and allowed five earned runs on nine hits, one walk and three punch outs.

Both teams registered 11 hits with Jack Reynolds pacing MD with a 2-for-4 effort with a single, a double and two runs scored. Kyler Von Bokel was 2-for-4 with two singles, two stolen bases and two batted in.
Adrian Rendon, Evan Kreke and Hayden Melone each had two hits in the win for MD.
Reynolds was the winning pitcher in relief as he went the final two innings and allowed one earned run on five hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
Mater Dei had five singles in the second inning with Von Bokel having a two-run single as MD took a 4-3 lead.
Mater Dei got two more in the fourth inning when Kreke led off with a double and Reynolds followed with a single. Rendon grounded out for an RBI while Melone made it 6-3 with a single up the middle.
New Athens tied it up in the sixth inning with three hits, a walk and an error as the game was 6-6.
Mater Dei answered in the bottom of the inning when Reynolds doubled and Avery Strader was hit by a pitch. Reynolds crossed on a single from Rendon before Strader scored on a sacrifice fly for an 8-6 lead.
Reynolds allowed one hit in the top of the seventh before the Jackets had a runner thrown out on the base paths to end the contest.
Central 11, Red Bud 0 (5 innings): The Cougars had no trouble in their home win last Monday at Allen Warnecke Field in Breese.
Bryce Wieter was the winning pitcher as he went the first three innings and allowed no hits and no walks with six punch outs. Aidan Huegen got the final six outs and allowed one hit.
Lincoln Radake was 2-for-4 with a single, a double, a run scored and four RBI. Conlan Haar was 2-for-3 with a single, a triple and two RBI.
Miles Browne, Wieter and Kaden Henss each had two hits for CHS who out hit the Musketeers 12-1 with RBHS having three of the game’s four fielding errors.
