Regional champs - The Mater Dei girls golf team won the Class A Regional at Governors Run Golf Course in Carlyle. PHOTO BY MATT WILSON    The Mater Dei Lady Knights keep crossing unchartered waters with their first-ever regional and sectional crowns last week as they will venture to Decatur this weekend to participate in the Class 1A State meet at Red Tail Run Golf Course on Friday and Saturday.    Central did not qualify as a team, but senior Maya Kampwerth advanced as an individual after she was runner-up with a round of 75.
    Class 1A Roxana Sectional:     The Mater Dei Lady Knights continued to rewrite the girls record book at MD with their first ever sectional title on Monday at Belk Park in Roxana.

PHOTO BY MATT WILSON    Mater Dei won the event with ease, shooting a 316 which was 18 shots better than Okawville who also advanced.  Alton Marquette was the third and final qualifier with a 341.  Central was in seventh with a 352.
    Mater Dei had a pair of golfers with fine showings with seniors Abilene Winkeler and Finley Meyer each carding 77s for a fourth-place effort.  Winkeler birdied hole six while Meyer birdied hole one and 11.
    Sophomore Bryn Winkeler was 12th overall with an 80 while Chloe Musenbrock was in 19th with an 82.  Elena Winter was 61st with a 93.
    Central senior Maya Kampwerth will advance to the state meet in Decatur as she was second overall with a 75, one shot behind the leader.  Kampwerth had birdies on holes seven, nine, 10 and 13 as she advanced as an individual.

    Graysen McKinney was next for the Cougars with an 89 while Mallory Shubert shot a 90.  Lili Lyons carded a 98.
    Carlyle junior Kailee Gregg qualified for the State meet with a 79 which was tied for ninth place.
    Class A Regional at Carlyle:  Mater Dei won the program's first ever regional championship on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Governors Run Golf Course in Carlyle.
    Mater Dei won with a 311. Central was second with a 332 and advanced to the sectional as a team for the fourth straight year. Alton Marquette was third with a 334.

PHOTO BY MATT WILSON    Central senior Maya Kampwerth earned medalist honors with a 5-under-par 67. She had a 3-under-par 33 on the front nine with seven pars, an eagle on the par-5, No. 3 hole; and a birdie on the par-3, No. 9 hole.
    She had  2-under-par 34 on the back nine. Her back nine included her first career hole in one on the 81-yard par-3, No. 14 hole. Kampwerth used a pitching wedge to record the ace.
    "I couldn't believe it when I saw it go in, I just burst into tears," Kampwerth said. "It was great. It hit the front of the green and it just kept rolling and went in."
    Along with her hole in one, Kampwerth birdied the par-5, No 11 hole; par-3, No. 12 hole; and par-4, No. 16 hole. She had two pars. Kampwerth was 6-under-par through 17 holes.
    "I was able to maintain my composure today," Kampwerth said. "I was very confident in all of my shots and confident in my putting. It just all came together today."
    Kampwerth was medalist for the first time in her prep career. She has placed in the top five individually at the regional for three straight years.
    Mater Dei senior Abilene Winkeler was second overall with a 1-over-par 73. She birdied the par-3, No. 2 hole; par-5, No. 3 hole; par-5, No. 7 hole; and the par-3, No. 9 hole and had a 1-over-par 37 on the front nine. She had five pars and birdied the par-3, No. 12 hole and the par-5, No. 18 hole for an even par 36 on the back nine.
    Winkeler was in the same group as Kampwerth and witnessed her hole in one.
    "Maya played amazing and I feel like that just brought everyone's spirits up," Winkeler said. "Her hole in one was awesome. I like playing with better competition because it feels like I'm playing with them."
    Sophomore Chloe Musenbrock tied for eighth with a 78. She had seven pars and a 2-over-par 38 on the front nine. She birdied the par-4, No. 16 hole and the par-5, No. 18 hole and had two pars for a 40 on the back nine.
    Senior Finley Meyer was 10th with a 79. Meyer birdied the par-5, No.3  hole and the par-3, No. 9 hole and had four pars for a 38 on the front nine. She had four pars and birdied the par-5, No. 18 hole on the back nine.
    Sophomore Bryn Winkeler was 11th with an 81. She birdied the par-5, No. 3 hole and the par-5, No. 7 hole and had two pars for a 41 on the front nine. She had three pars and birdied the par-4, No. 16 hole for a 40 on the back nine.
    Junior Elena Winter was 15th with an 84. She had seven pars and a 2-over-par 38 on the front nine. 
    Freshman Sophia Voss was 39th with a 101.
    "This team has worked very hard," Abilene Winkeler said "In the past few years we have been working up to this moment. Everyone contributed and played their part today and it was a good round."
    Central junior Mallory Shubert tied for eighth with a 78. She had six pars and a 3-over-par 39 on the front nine. She had three pars and birdied the par-4, No. 16 hole and the par-5, No. 18 hole for a 3-over-par 39 on the back nine.
    Junior Graysen McKinney tied for 18th with a 90. She birdied the par-5, No. 3 hole and had two pars for a 43 on the front nine. She had two pars on the back nine.
    Freshman Chloe Rau tied for 31st with a 97. She had five pars and a 46 on the back nine. Freshman Callie Hasselhorst was 35th with a 98. She had one par on the front nine and two pars on the back nine.
    Junior Ellie Garrison was 45th with a 106. She birdied the par-5, No. 18 hole.
    "As a team, we just really pulled through today," Kampwerth said. "All of the girls have gained a lot of confidence and we are all just at a good spot right now."
    Carlyle senior Ava Meyer qualified for the sectional for the fourth straight year after tying for fifth place with a 77. Meyer had four pars and birdied the par-5, No. 3 hole and the par-4, No. 6 hole for a 40 on the front nine. She had six pars and birdied the par-5, No. 11 hole for a 37 on the back nine.
    Carlyle junior Kailee Gregg qualified for sectionals for the third straight year after tying Meyer with a 77. Gregg had six pars and birdied the par-5, No. 3 hole for a 38 on the front nine. She had five pars and birdied the par-5, No. 18 hole for a 39 on the back nine.
